Scottish Opera
Scottish Opera celebrates 50 years of ground breaking outreach and education work in this year (2021), making it the longest running programme of its kind in any of Europe’s opera companies. Teaching artists specialising in music, dance, drama, film and visual arts deliver an annual programme which, in 2019, engaged with nearly 40,000 people of all ages & experiences. From operas for babies &toddlers; a primary schools’ programme that involves over 8000 pupils per year performing in their own schools; a new online programme for secondary schools focusing on developing critical thinking skills to social awareness initiatives for mental health & wellbeing for adults living with dementia or recovering from Covid 19, Scottish Opera works with a wide range of educational and social care partnerships. One of the first performing arts companies in the UK to return to live performances following the first pandemic lockdown in September2020, our Pop Up Opera tours – featuring a cast of 5 performing from a curtainsider truck to socially distanced audiences in parks & gardens and other outside venues across Scotland – has in in the past year, now given over 250 performances of specially adapted 30 minute operas to over 13,000 people across Scotland.
